WARNING: Hoax support phone calls happening right now!

This may sound like an urban myth but it just happened to me a few times now. I've also had customers caught out and, as a result, some urgent calls to banks etc. to cancel credit cards and close accounts.

Hence the alarmist nature of this post.

I was called by "Kevin", who was clearly off-shore, from "PC Support Services" or some such.

He told me that my computer was sending their system some errors and that is why he is calling me.

He offered to take me through a procedure to rectify these problems.

I played along for a bit just to see how far he got. I was fairly sure the procedure would end with me deleting important files or divulging information they could exploit.

So, before that happened, I asked for his name, phone number and to repeat the company he worked for.
He went quiet.

When I told him I was recording the conversation for the police he hung up. Some of my customers have also tried this and found it quite fun and helpful :-)

So be careful. These guys are quite bold and don't seem to be going away any time soon.

Regards,
David Moore
