I don't know if I've tried this before and forgotten it or just
never known it at all, but a few days ago I used the CTRL (Control) key
to make multiple selections of words inside an email using the
double-click.
I suspect that my brain had decided that the "double-click" and the "Control" use were mutually exclusive. I am not sure why.
Of course, thinking about it for a fraction of a second it suddenly seemed logical and obvious to me. Weird.
The success or otherwise of this strategy does depend on your email client and/or the word processing software (or any other text editor) you are using at the time.
Every now and then I'm surprised by the things that surprise me.
Experiment, Compute well, backup better, have fun!
